Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were reportedly interested in Rodrigo ahead of the summer, and he has shown why in his opening game of the season.

According to Calciomercato towards the end of last season, both Tottenham and Everton were both interested in signing Rodrigo from Valencia during the summer after his superb campaign in La Liga.

It was, of course, to prove an extremely frustrating window for Spurs with Mauricio Pochettino unable to add a single player to his ranks. It does not appear to have hurt Tottenham too much during the opening stages of the season, but the supporters would be forgiven for being concerned about the depth for when the games come thick and fast.

Everton meanwhile, did not add significant numbers in attacking areas either. Richarlison has arrived at Goodison Park and made a fantastic start with three goals in two games, but the Toffees perhaps also come out of the window with not as much depth in the final third as Marco Silva would like.

So perhaps there may have been a little frustration for Spurs and Everton supporters when they saw Rodrigo take just 56 minutes of the new La Liga season to open his account with a stunning finish.

The Spain international took a cross down brilliantly as Valencia searched for an equaliser after going a goal down at home to Atletico Madrid. The 27-year-old’s chest control took him away from his marker and created an opening for the forward to smash the ball into the net on the volley to level the score.

It was a superb goal, and given that it comes off the back of a campaign which saw Rodrigo score 16 times in the Spanish top flight, it may not be a great surprise if he shows the kind of form during the coming season that makes Spurs or Everton somewhat rue seemingly not following up on their initial interest earlier in the year.
