Kiko Casilla has found himself a new club after leaving Leeds United on a free transfer, joining La Liga outfit Getafe – and both Rodrigo and Barry Douglas are among those to react to his Instagram post this week.
Casilla, 35, finally leaves Leeds after three and a half years on the books at Elland Road. He spent last season with Elche, largely acting ac back-up goalkeeper and keeping five clean sheets in 16 appearances for the La Liga outfit.
During his initial two and a half years actually in Yorkshire, Casilla joined in January 2019 from Real Madrid. But he instantly was thought of as a bit of a bomb scare at the back, proven by his displays in the play-offs against Derby.
A few more mistakes came down the line, as well as being suspended for eight matches after a racial interaction with Jonathan Leko. It saw Illan Meslier has come in and the Frenchman has remained as Leeds’ no.1 ever since.
Now, Casilla has left Leeds on a free transfer and joined his sixth Spanish club on a one-year deal. Getafe will be competing in La Liga, and he will face direct competition to start with David Soria. He posted on Instagram.
His post is translated as: “Very excited to be joining this exciting project! A new challenge in my career that makes me feel with the same motivation or more than when I started professional Thank you very much to everyone.”
Casilla has new club after leaving Leeds: Rodrigo and Douglas react
It was an underwhelming spell at Elland Road. Especially, given the hype when he signed. Leeds fans were delighted that they were bringing in a Spain international. Three Champions League wins, and 42 Real Madrid outings.
But it never worked out for Leeds, or Casilla. A silver lining is that Meslier has come in following his poor form and suspension. He has given Leeds a no.1 for years to come. That is, if Manchester United do not try to sign him.
Plenty responded to his permanent Leeds exit, including fellow Spaniard Rodrigo – as well as ex-Leeds left-backs Douglas and Leif Davis. The latter has left Elland Road to join Ipswich Town this summer.
