With Robert Sanchez sent off early, Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 at Old Trafford to seal their second Premier League win of the season.
Ruben Amorim had been under heavy scrutiny following last weekend’s 3-0 derby defeat, but that result may give him some breathing space.
There is plenty of quality in his squad. For instance, Kobbie Mainoo continues to impress, Bruno Fernandes remains a standout, and Matheus Cunha has added extra spark.
And while Casemiro may be past his prime, his legacy in the game is unquestioned.
Rodri highlights Casemiro’s work-rate
During an ESPN segment, Rodri was asked to create his ideal midfielder by choosing different attributes from various players.
Names like Kevin De Bruyne and Andres Iniesta were obvious picks in some categories, but Rodri chose Casemiro when discussing work-rate.
Even though he has lost a step, Casemiro was once known for running the midfield on his own, not just covering ground but also reading the game and moving the ball effectively.
Rio Ferdinand chooses Casemiro over Rodri
There is a natural comparison between Casemiro and Rodri.
Both players made the move to Manchester from Madrid, so it is no surprise their careers get lined up side by side.
On TNT Sports, Rio Ferdinand has spoken about the two before, and at one point, he said he would choose Casemiro over Rodri.
“I would take Casemiro because I think the impact he has had is huge. He’s more than a footballer, he’s a leader on that pitch.
“With the experience he’s got and what he’s won as well, it just elevates him above at this stage. But Rodri is a fantastic footballer.”
Since those comments, Rodri has gone on to win the Ballon d’Or, while Casemiro has faced growing criticism at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard is clearly ahead of him now, but it is important to remember how good Casemiro was during his peak years. At his best, there were not many better in his position.
