Former Manchester City forward Rodney Marsh has tried to temper the hype and expectations on Liverpool central midfielder Thiago Alcantara on Twitter.
Marsh has suggested that people should wait until Thiago has played three or four games in the Premier League for Liverpool before comparing him to Reds legends Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso.
Earlier this week, in his column for The Liverpool Echo, former Reds striker Aldridge wrote that Thiago – signed from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £20 million – “is a joy to watch” and is “an artist on the ball”.
Aldridge added: “Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard, going back to Jan Molby who I played alongside and this lad is right up there, you just want to see him getting on the ball all the time.
“He is a glorious, lovely footballer to watch and I think Liverpool fans are going to get a lot of enjoyment from him.”
Marsh has suggested that such grand comparisons are premature as Thiago has played just twice in the Premier League so far, once as a substitute, according to WhoScored.
Big player for Liverpool
While it is true that Thiago has not really done much for Liverpool yet, it must be noted what he achieved during his time at Bayern.
The Spain international central midfielder played a big role in the German giants winning the Champions League last season.
The 29-year-old also won the Bundesliga title seven times during his time at Bayern, and the La Liga twice with Barcelona.
Thiago is a serial winner, and he would not have played for Barcelona or Bayern if he was not a brilliant footballer.
