Pundit was quick to put down former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton.
Former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has accused the media of playing a key role in his downfall at the club.
Barton’s contract was terminated by Rangers after just eight games after internal rows, and speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the midfielder says the expectations on him were too high.
Joey Barton applauds fans as he is substituted
Barton said that he was expected to create and influence games, which simply is not part of his skill set.
Of course, Barton being Barton, could not say all of this without a ridiculous soundbite – exaggeratingly stating that the media hyped him into a ‘Neymar or Messi’ calibre player, which inevitably left fans feeling let down.
Former QPR and Manchester City ace Rodney Marsh has clashed with Barton in the past, and had little time for his comments, mockingly comparing him to Carlton Palmer instead.
Marsh went onto clarify his comment, insisting he meant no disrespect to Palmer.
Marsh’s reaction shows how Barton has become a figure of fun, after his woeful Rangers spell.
He is a free agent and looking to sign with a new club in January, which will perhaps provide his last chance to salvage the damage done to his footballing reputation.
