Rodney Marsh says he would hand Harry Kane a four-year contract worth £20 million a year if he was in chairman Daniel Levy’s place at Tottenham Hotspur.
Indeed, Kane has become central to Tottenham’s hopes of success – as their main centre-forward and only recognised out-and-out striker.
And Marsh believes the 22-year-old deserves recognition in the form of a huge salary and a lengthy new deal.
A bigger issue for many Spurs fans, of course, isn’t holding onto Kane but finding a back-up for him.
Is Saido Berahino good enough? Could Ayoze Perez be prised away from Newcastle? Is Jackson Martinez in enough form to attract a bid?
Realistically, Tottenham will suffer if they don’t have a stand in for Kane. Yes, Heung-Min Son can play as a centre-forward and, yes, Kane could survive the rest of the season without injury.
But even the law of averages suggests the 22-year-old will miss a game or two through fitness-related issues, leaving the north London side needing a certified striker who can get 5-10 Premier League goals between now and the end of the season when called upon.
