West Ham United summer signing Marko Arnautovic received some criticism for his display against Manchester United – but pundit Rodney Marsh has moved to defend the Austrian.
The Hammers travelled to Old Trafford on Sunday to kick off their Premier League season, but they were on the receiving end of a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

West Ham’s long-time nemesis Romelu Lukaku continued his remarkable goalscoring form against the Hammers with two goals on his Old Trafford debut, before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba scored late goals to make it 4-0 for United.
Manager Slaven Bilic included summer signings Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez in his side, but the new boys couldn’t prevent a thrashing – and even received some criticism.
Winger Arnautovic, signed from Stoke City in a club-record deal this summer, didn’t have the desired impact in attack for West Ham against United, leading some to question his display.
The 28-year-old Austrian was always a hot-and-cold player for Stoke, as he was just as capable of producing moments of magic as he was of producing anonymous displays for the Potters.

Whilst some felt that his display against Manchester United fit into the latter category, but pundit Rodney Marsh moved to defend the forward on Twitter long after the final whistle at Old Trafford.
Marsh responded to pundits criticising Arnautovic by suggesting that it was just one bad performance against a very good team, and urged pundits and fans to give him at least 12 games in a West Ham shirt before making judgements on him.
