Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has claimed that his side’s 7-1 loss away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last night wasn’t as bad as the 7-0 defeat they suffered against Barcelona last season.

Although their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the competition were already over, it was still a miserable night for Celtic in France as, despite taking the lead through Moussa Dembele in the first minute, PSG quickly assumed control of proceedings.

Neymar, who also featured in the aforementioned game for Barcelona, hit a brace for PSG, with Edinson Cavani doing likewise, while Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Dani Alves also got on the scoresheet.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Rodgers said: “We conceded seven goals in Barcelona and I was very disappointed after that.

“But in a strange way there were lots of good moments in this game for us. We scored first and you could see the belief we had in the way we were working. We were defending strong and had a good focus.

“We gave the ball away in midfield which gave them the opportunity for first goal. The spell after that was most disappointing, the way we gave the goals away from corners and set pieces.”

Rodgers requires his players to bounce back quickly for Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final against Motherwell, and a win in that game would certainly help Celtic to move on from last night’s disappointing defeat.

Celtic remain six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and are on an unbeaten run of 64 domestic games.

After last night’s result, however, it is important that they regain confidence quickly and don’t let the loss to PSG affect their league form.

Following the League Cup final Celtic’s next two games are also against Motherwell, both of which are in the league.
