Rodgers responds when asked about raiding Celtic for Lee Congerton

Celtic’s Lee Congerton has been linked with a move to Leicester City.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has been quoted by The Scottish Sun as saying that the club are pressing ahead with the pursuit of a new head of recruitment amid links to Celtic’s Lee Congerton.

Rodgers surprisingly ditched Celtic for Leicester City back in February, deciding to leave the Bhoys in the middle of a title race in order to return to the Premier League.

After nearly three years in charge at Parkhead, Rodgers’ exit has left a sour taste with many Celtic fans, and he may well be eyeing up some Celtic players for the summer transfer window.

One move Rodgers has been strongly linked with is a move for Congerton, with The Telegraph claiming that a reunion could be on the cards.

Rodgers worked with Congerton at Chelsea before bringing him to Celtic in 2017, following his departure from Sunderland – and it’s been a patchy spell at Parkhead for the Welshman.

Congerton oversaw disappointing deals for Kundai Benyu, Marvin Compper, Charly Musonda, Jack Hendry and Youssouf Mulumbu, whilst recent loan deals haven’t exactly paid off either.

Many Celtic fans have called for Congerton to go, and with Leicester losing Eduardo Macia this summer, Congerton could come in as his new head of recruitment in a reunion Celtic supporters may love.

Now, Rodgers has admitted that there’s nothing to add just yet, but Leicester are progressing with their pursuit and will ultimately ask for his opinion, meaning Congerton may well feature prominently in the search.

“I know the club is progressing with some candidates, but there is nothing new to add,” said Rodgers. “There is still work going on behind the scenes and we have a number of recruitment staff still here compiling the list for the types of players, and then the club will appoint someone hopefully soon.”

“The club is working very hard behind the scenes identifying the types of players we can bring in, but that is ongoing. The club will ask my opinion on it. I will always work with the club on identifying the talent and people coming in hopefully can bring the talent in, but ultimately it will be the decision of the club, but I am happy with that,” he added.
