Fulham have announced that 14 of their players will become free agents, and one of those is Alfie Mawson – a player Brendan Rodgers wanted at Celtic in 2018. The centre-back has struggled to overcome a knee problem.

Mawson, 28, went to Fulham in the summer of 2018 for a fee believed to be in the region of £20million (BBC) from Swansea. Earlier that year, Celtic wanted the defender while Rodgers was still in charge.

Fulham went down in Mawson’s first year at the club, and in his second season, he went under the knife to correct a knee issue. That has since happened in his third and fourth years, even while on loan at Bristol City.

Now, Fulham have announced their departure list at the end of the 2021-22 campaign. Mawson managed eight appearances under Marco Silva as Fulham were promoted. Unsurprisingly, he will not be signing a new deal.

Celtic wanted Mawson: Now a free agent after Fulham decision

Mawson was a proper talent at Swansea and was even part of the England squad, ahead of the 2018 World Cup. But ultimately, his move to Fulham has been marred by injury and he will do well to find a new club.

Should Celtic revisit a move? Probably not. Mawson’s injury issues have hardly left him the same player and he needs to join a club where he will be playing football on a regular basis, put his nightmare spell behind him.

At Celtic, he will certainly not get that. Even if the Hoops fail to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently, they still have Carl Starfelt, Chris Jullien and Stephen Welsh. New signings are also likely at Parkhead.
