Celtic’s defensive options have been criticised of late.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has offered a blunt response to The Scotsman when asked whether he needs to sign another centre back during the January transfer window.
The Bhoys went into the transfer window with centre back being one of their key areas to strengthen, and Rodgers made one early move to rectify that problem.
German veteran Marvin Compper arrived from RB Leipzig on the 1st of January having agreed a deal with Celtic in January, though he is already out with a calf injury.
The 32-year-old has been signed as competition for Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, but many feel that Celtic still need more strength at the back.
Celtic this week allowed out of favour defender Erik Sviatchenko to re-join former club Midtjylland, meaning Rodgers’ options at the back are depleted again.
Kristoffer Ajer is developing, but with Nir Bitton seen primarily as a midfielder, fans and pundits are keen to see another centre back arrive this month ahead of the Europa League clashes with Zenit St. Petersburg.
That situation has been floated to manager Rodgers, but he offered a blunt response when asked by The Scotsman whether he needed to bring in another centre back.
Rodgers merely said “not for me, no” when quizzed on whether he needed to sign another defender, even after Compper’s month-long absence was confirmed – which may just frustrate Celtic fans.
