Celtic should be in the market for a new right back in 2019.
Speculation surrounds the future of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, as he continues to be linked with a move to Aston Villa after a tough couple of months.
The Bhoys manager has appeared frustrated with a lack of backing in the summer transfer market, and Celtic fans may be left concerned that the Northern Irishman will move on.
For now though, Celtic have Rodgers in charge, and he will surely be planning for 2019 additions after a frustrating summer, and a right back has to be a priority.
Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa are both out of contract, and bringing in a younger option to replace one or both of them should be high on Rodgers’ list for January or the summer.
One option should be Swansea City’s Connor Roberts, who has starred for Graham Potter’s side this season and has earned four caps for the Welsh national team, even scoring against the Republic of Ireland last month.
The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and unless Swansea can agree a new deal with their homegrown right back, they will be susceptible to losing him on a free transfer in 2019.
Strong defensively and going forward, Roberts has huge potential and would be a bargain addition to the Celtic back line, giving Rodgers a right back with international experience as well as the room to grow and improve without breaking the bank.
Rodgers would have to raid his former club to strike such a deal, and if he does stay at Celtic, then Roberts should be near the top of the list of right back targets, with the Bhoys surely set to try and solve that problem position.
