Rod Laver and Roger Federer took in most of the action of the Australian Open’s first day on the Grand Slam’s main court.

Federer has been a pivotal figure in the run-up to the Australian Open, having practised with Casper Ruud and played out an exhibition doubles match with Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter, and Ash Barty.

Laver and Federer watched on as the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz secured their places in the second round of the Grand Slam.

The Grand Slam-winning pair even took a selfie with Sabalenka following her victory against Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah.

Rod Laver sends Roger Federer a message after Australian Open appearance

Laver took to social media on the second day of the Australian Open to share some photos and a message for the Swiss star.

Alongside three photos of Federer and Laver in the crowd, the Australian wrote: “Great company as always, Roger Federer.”

The two men’s involvement in the ‘Opening Week’ of the Australian Open helped the ‘Happy Slam’ break attendance records every day.

The opening day of the Australian Open attracted 101,696 fans to Melbourne Park, which is more than any previous event.

Federer and Laver will not be the only legends in attendance across the Grand Slam, with Rafael Nadal also set for an appearance during the closing ceremony.

What happened when Roger Federer and Rod Laver practised together in 2014

Federer has always held Laver in high regard and even paid tribute to the Australian icon when he conjured up the Laver Cup.

The Swiss star had the opportunity to hit with Laver during the 2014 Australian Open, which he described as ‘an absolute dream come true’.

He added: “It’s in his arena as well, it’s named after him and he deserves it so much. He told me that his wrist was hurting less on the forehand so he asked me to play there a bit more often.

“I was happy we had some rallies. What an honour it was for me and I hope that the crowd enjoyed it and I’m very thankful that he was willing to do something like this because it’s not normal in any way and that’s why I really appreciate it.”

Federer’s practise session with Laver did not provide him the luck he needed at the Grand Slam, as he crashed out of the semi-finals to Rafael Nadal. The eventual winner was Stan Wawrinka.
