Laurent Koscielny is set to be named as Arsenal’s new captain, according to reports.
Speaking to ESPN, former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson has suggested an interesting reason as to why manager Arsene Wenger will reportedly choose Laurent Koscielny as captain.
Speculation has mounted in recent days (The Metro) that Wenger will name the French centre-back as the club’s new captain, following the release of midfielder Mikel Arteta.
As far as captains go, it seems, on the surface, a strange choice by Wenger if true, given that Koscielny would not appear to be the most vocal player, nor the one who boasts many leadership qualities to be fair.
This past season, his centre-back partner Per Mertesacker often wore the armband due to Arteta’s absence, though the big German looks set to be overlooked for the role.
Wenger’s last two club captains have been Arteta and Thomas Vermaelen, while Robin van Persie, a strong character it must be noted, held the role prior to his departure in 2012.
And Robson has suggested that the 66-year-old is in the business of appointing perceived ‘yes’ men these days in an effort to avoid being confronted about anything relating to the team.
He told ESPN: “You don’t always have to be vocal as a captain. You can lead by example. Arsene Wenger wants a captain who’s going to lead by example because he doesn’t want a confrontation with anybody.”
