Liverpool fans won’t be seeing Virgil van Dijk at the European Championship this month – and it’s a decision that most are completely happy with.

Van Dijk hasn’t kicked a ball for Liverpool since October of last year due to injury.

But in recent months there were suggestions that he could be fit for the Netherlands’ summer campaign.

In fact, Frank de Boer revealed that he would be selecting the towering Reds centre-back even if he hadn’t made his comeback at club level yet.

But Van Djk himself made himself unavailable for the competition in order to continue working on his rehabilitation at Liverpool.

And his team-mate Andy Robertson has claimed that it’s the ‘best decision for his career’.

He told The National: “To see him not make it is obviously hard, but he has made the best decision for his career. He seems quite content with that decision. Obviously he is disappointed, but he has made the best decision for his body and that’s why he has ruled himself out.”

100% fit

Liverpool fans for the most part just want to see their big £180,000-a-week defender completely fit in time for the 2021-22 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s side did well to salvage a third-place Premier League finish in the end, sealing Champions League qualification.

But Van Dijk’s injury was a massive reason as to why Liverpool failed to successfully defend their Premier League title.

He is a huge player for the Anfield club but the fact that he’ll be ready for the start of next season, after skipping Euro 2020, should be of big benefit for Klopp’s team.
