Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has suffered an injury on international duty.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has been quoted by Football.London as saying that Jan Vertonghen’s injury is not serious, and he will play against Japan on Tuesday.
Tottenham went into the international break having beaten Crystal Palace 1-0 at Wembley Stadium, with Mauricio Pochettino no doubt hoping that he would suffer no more injury woes.
Hugo Lloris suffered an injury against Real Madrid to keep him out against Crystal Palace, forcing him to be omitted from the French national team for their international games.

Defender Toby Alderweireld faced a similar situation, as an injury against Real Madrid put paid to his international hopes, and Pochettino will have wanted nothing but good news over the international break.
However, Pochettino has been handed a scare today, as Alderweireld’s defensive partner and international partner Jan Vertonghen has suffered an ankle injury during his time with Belgium.
Vertonghen will now miss the friendly against Mexico on Friday as the two teams prepare for the World Cup in Russia next summer, leaving Spurs fans worried.

With the North London derby against rivals Arsenal coming up after the international break, Spurs can’t afford to have Vertonghen injured as well as Alderweireld, but those concerned Spurs fans have been given a boost.
Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has now been quoted by Football.London as saying that whilst Vertonghen’s ankle injury will keep him out on Friday, he should play against Japan on Tuesday, meaning he is likely to be available against Arsenal.
“Jan Vertonghen suffers with his ankle and he will not play against Mexico, but he will be available for Tuesday’s match against Japan,” said Martinez.
