Roberto Martinez gives his backing to Everton’s Ross Barkley

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley’s future is firmly up in the air currently.

Roberto Martinez has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 21st September, that Everton’s Ross Barkley will turn his career around.

Barkley was expected to leave Everton in the summer transfer window, after not penning a new deal at Goodison Park.

However, no transfer materialised, and Barkley now faces a year with a lot of uncertainty around him.

Barkley is currently out injured, but even when he returns to fitness, it is not clear whether Ronald Koeman intends to put him back in to Everton’s team.

But Martinez believes that whatever happens with Barkley this season, the England international will bounce back from this set-back.

“Absolutely. I’ve got no doubts [he can turn it around],” Martinez said. “Ross has been through a lot of adversity in his career already. He’s been out on loan at Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday, and didn’t play as much as he should have done, and then he broke his leg.

“He always overcame adversity. He is the type who will never give up. I can see Ross Barkley coming back and showing the real talent that he has.”

Martinez was the manager who gave Barkley his chance at Everton, and the Spanish boss was always a big advocate for the attacking midfielder.

If Barkley does return to Everton’s team it will increase their attacking threat, but Koeman has a great deal of other options available to him and competing to play in the number 10 spot.

Barkley is expected to return from injury in around two months’ time, after damaging his hamstring during pre-season.
