The Brazilian signed for £29 million from Hoffenheim this summer.
Liverpool summer signing Roberto Firmino has been discussing his sporting superstitions.
He told the club’s official magazine that he is not the only Brazilian footballer to have adopted such methods, suggesting that these actions are quite common among his countrymen.
He said: “I always step on to the pitch with my right foot first.
“It’s quite curious that back home – even if you are left-footed – it is considered lucky to enter the pitch with your right foot. I don’t know why that is the case.
“I have other mandatory superstitions before a game too. I pray and listen to music on the way to the stadium. I also bless myself just before kick-off.”
The £29 million signing from Hoffenheim – as reported by the BBC – is still settling into life at Anfield and is yet to complete 90 minutes as he continues to build up his fitness with the Reds, but there will be hope among the club’s supporters that his superstitions will start to pay off in one way or another.
There have been flashes of what the Brazilian can do so far at Liverpool, having shown some nice touches, and one particular effort from range that cannoned off the woodwork during the defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.
The international break will probably halt his integration a little but there are plenty of games coming up after his duty with the Brazil squad for him to start really finding his role within the Reds’ side.
Given the burden of his price tag, though, as soon as a meaningful contribution has been made by the Brazilian, the easier it will be to kick on in his Liverpool career.
