Roberto Di Matteo has suggested in the Guardian that Aston Villa’s players will not be judged on their contributions to last season.
Villa had a disastrous campaign last term, as they fell out of the Premier League for the first time in their history.
The Claret and Blues were woefully short of form and confidence, and they managed to win just three matches all campaign.
Hardly any of Villa’s players came out of the season with their reputations enhanced. However, certain members of the squad received a lot more criticism than others.
One of Villa’s biggest under-performers was striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who frustrated with his performances on the pitch and his attitude off it.
But Di Matteo said, when quizzed on Agbonlahor’s future: “I don’t think it is fair to judge people just on what happened in the last 12 months.”
Agbonlahor is said to have worked hard to get into shape over pre-season, to ensure that he is in a position to help the Midlands side out this campaign.
The forward has a lot of work to do to win over the fans, but it seems that he could have an opportunity to work his way back into favour at the club where he has spent his entire career to date.
