Roberto Di Matteo has told Aston Villa’s official website that he has faith in Aaron Tshibola.
The 21-year-old came off the bench to rescue a point for Aston Villa with a late goal in Saturday evening’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at Villa Park.
An own goal from Tommy Elphick had looked like giving the visitors all three points, but Tshibola, who had been absent for five weeks with a groin problem, was the hero.
It may or may not be a coincidence that the Villans did not win any of the five games which Tshibola – a summer signing from Reading – missed through injury.
During his layoff, Aston Villa drew four and lost one of the five Championship games, but the Italian manager is hopeful that his summer recruit can now enjoy a run in the side following his groin problem.
“We know his qualities. Luckily he got the equaliser. Hopefully he can get a bit of continuity into his game now,” he told Aston Villa’s website.
“He missed out a while with injury. He is certainly a player we have faith in.”
Aston Villa have dropped 13 points in games which Tshibola has not started and it will be interesting to see if his return to fitness brings about a more fruitful run of games.
They visit Barnsley, who have lost their last two games, on Tuesday night.
