The Claret and Blues have signed three players so far this summer, with Tommy Elphick, Pierluigi Gollini and Aaron Tshibola all joining Di Matteo’s side.
Villa are now set to turn their attentions to clearing out some of their fringe players from last campaign.
Di Matteo has had time to assess the quality of his squad during their pre-season tour of Austria, and he has suggested that a number of players could leave.
The volume of players that Villa are able to ship out will determine how many new additions Di Matteo wants.
But the arrival of a new striker is at the top of the Italian boss’s wishlist, regardless of who departs.
“We’re certainly looking for a striker,” Di Matteo said.
“And maybe some more attacking players, depending on how the next few weeks go and which players are going to leave.”
Villa have been linked with a host of strikers so far this summer, including Patrick Bamford, Ivica Olic and Islam Slimani.
The Claret and Blues begin their season with a match against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough next month.
