Roberto has admitted to West Ham United’s official website that he was not expecting to be thrown into Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team already.

Roberto was brought in at West Ham to be back-up to Lukasz Fabianski, but he is not set for a run of games in the team.

Fabianski has been ruled out for three months with injury, with Roberto having to quickly adjust to being first choice.

And the Spanish stopper admits that he wasn’t really expecting to have such a good opportunity to stake his claim for a place.

“It’s something that I probably didn’t expect in the beginning,” he said.

“I knew when I arrived it was always going to be a difficult fight or half-fight with Lukasz. But unfortunately, he has gotten injured and that’s something that we don’t like but for a goalkeeper that represents an opportunity that I will try to take.”

Roberto hasn’t fully convinced at West Ham during his time on the pitch so far.

However, Pellegrini will be hoping that the experienced stopper can prove reliable until Fabianski returns.

West Ham have made a promising start to the season, so they won’t want any disruption in goal to cause complications.

The Hammers are next in action tomorrow, when they take on a struggling Everton side.
