Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has told Goal he thinks Liverpool will challenge for the title this season.

The Reds have started this campaign on fire, picking up 16 points from their first seven games.

They have put recorded some big wins already, beating Arsenal 4-3 on an opening day, champions Leicester City 4-3 and Chelsea 2-1.

For many, they are serious contenders with Manchester City for the title, especially given they do not have the distraction of European football, unlike the other contenders.

And that is Lewandowski’s thinking too as he says manager Jurgen Klopp is ruthless enough to take advantage of the fact.

“Under Klopp, I think they will be fighting for the title this season,” he told Goal.

“Pep and Manchester City will not make it easy for anybody to win the title, but Liverpool have a real chance.”

“Without European football, it can really help them with being fresh for games and with injuries and, even though Klopp is always smiling, he is ruthless enough to take advantage of that.”

The Polish striker is well aware of the abilities of Klopp having worked under him during his time at Borussia Dortmund.

He developed into one of the world’s best strikers under the German, helping Dortmund win the Bundesliga title under his guidance.

His personal relationship with his players was key to that and Lewandowski says it there to see at Liverpool also.

“I have watched some Liverpool games since the arrival of Klopp, and you can see that the players are enjoying playing for him,” he explained.

“As a player you know that he totally has your back, he is like a father figure and, because you have that trust in him as a player, it makes you totally open to his methods.”
