Chris Wood scored a dramatic late equaliser in the 95th minute against Newcastle United at Tyneside on Friday night to earn Leeds United a precious point.
It is the business end of the season, and every point matters. Robert Green, the Leeds goalkeeper, who had an excellent game on Friday night, has described Wood as a ‘top striker’ following his late goal against Newcastle.
The 25-year-old striker has been one of the star players for Leeds this season, and his ice-cool finish deep into the stoppage time showcased the nerve of a winner.
With that clinical strike, Wood has scored his 28th goal of a remarkable season. Reflecting on that goal, Green says that it was a quality finish and shows why Wood is considered as a top striker.
“It is priceless something like that. It is why people are worth what they are worth up front. “They (Newcastle) had some near misses on their part. We hit the bar and then had a save straight after, but that was it in terms of chances,” said Green, as quoted by the Yorkshire Post.
“He (Wood) looked exposed at times and a bit lonely up there, but we can play badly and when Chris gets a chance and he tucks it away. He made it look a simple finish, but everyone in football knows that was a quality, quality finish.
“That is the standard of a top striker. You get some quality on the ball and there is an even-money chance he will stick it away.”
Green adds that Newcastle have got quality in abundance and therefore to get away with a point is a huge reward for their fighting spirit.
The manner in which they secured the draw feels like a win and Green says that they want to keep that belief going right through the end of this campaign.
Leeds United will face Wolves in yet another crucial Championship clash on Monday night.
