Robert Earnshaw told the Football Show on Sky Sports (24/03/21 at 10:05 am) that Gareth Bale was ‘smiling’ and looked ‘happy’ in training for Wales after his controversial comments about Tottenham.

Ahead of the international fixtures, Bale has stated that he intends to return to Real Madrid next season after trying to get ‘match fit’ at Tottenham, as he told BBC Sport.

They are comments that haven’t sat well with the Tottenham supporters, but Bale cannot worry about that too much now.

Wales are set to take on the world’s number one ranked team in Belgium on Wednesday night in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

And former Premier League striker, Earnshaw, who posted on Twitter that he had visited Wales training, shared what Bale has been like after those comments about his future.

“We were expecting him to fire within the first four or five months,” said Earnshaw. “But it didn’t happen. It was about his fitness. It was about him getting right physically.

“I think what you have seen during the last two months is him closer to his best. And closer to the player that makes the difference. The player that is brave and provides exciting play.

“Whatever his plans are. If it’s to go back to Real Madrid, to Tottenham or something else. It will always be followed by close eyes.

“But he feels good. He looks good. He was smiling in training. He was happy. Playing with him and understanding him, he’s a person who actually just loves to play football.”

The problem from the Tottenham fans won’t be that Bale plans to head back to Madrid in the summer, it’s the sense that he has used the club to get his fitness back.

It begs the question. If the delayed Euros weren’t taking place this summer then would Bale have returned to Tottenham?

And it will be interesting to see how Bale is welcomed back by those in Madrid because his relationship with the fans and the club isn’t exactly rosy.
