During the ongoing 2022/2023 season, perhaps one of the most criticised players has to be Trent Alexander-Arnold up until this point.
Coming off the back of yet another stellar campaign for Liverpool, the 24-year-old’s form has fallen off a cliff thus far.
From a defensive perspective, the much-maligned right-back has been underwhelming to say the least.
Far too often, the Englishman has struggled at the back in 1v1 situations in particular and has been culpable at the back for a number of the goals conceded by the Reds.
Whilst the England international is often renowned for his tremendous abilities as a playmaker, he is yet to register a single assist in the league this term.
As a result, many fans and pundits alike have questioned whether he should be on the plane to the Qatar World Cup, before the decorated defender’s place in the side was confirmed by England’s official Twitter account on Thursday.
Legendary left-back, Roberto Carlos has come out and said that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place in the Three Lions’ roster should never be in doubt.
“[Alexander-Arnold] has to be there – because he’s among the best ones”, he said in an interview with the Telegraph.
Carlos continued, “You [England] have a good team, not just in terms of names but in terms of players who have trained well and are ready to play at a World Cup, or to play for the Brazilian national team. I’d say those two [Kane and Alexander-Arnold], but there are more.”
Considering the now-retired defender is hailed as arguably the best left-back to ever grace the gane, the fact that he deems the Liverpool right-back to play for Brazil is a huge compliment.
Roberto Carlos’ unshakeable faith in Trent Alexander-Arnold as a player is a reminder of the fact that while he may be out of form currently, there is no denying that he has been nothing short of an outstanding footballer over the years.
