Celebrity involvement in football is becoming more than just a passing trend.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have turned Wrexham into a global story, Ed Sheeran has been sponsoring Ipswich Town, and Tom Brady has taken a role at Birmingham City.
Now, Robbie Williams is the latest to get involved, but his move is not just about branding. It is personal.
Robbie Williams becomes Port Vale’s newest shirt sponsor

Williams, one of the UK’s best-known pop stars, first rose to fame with Take That before going solo with hits like Angels and Rock DJ.
A lifelong Port Vale supporter, he has just made his bond with the club even stronger.
Williams has signed on as Port Vale’s official front-of-shirt sponsor for the next two seasons, with his logo appearing in the centre of both home and away kits.
The deal also makes him an ambassador for the Port Vale Foundation, adding a community side to the partnership.
Williams called it “a match made in heaven” and spoke about his memories of going to Vale Park as a child when tickets cost just 50p.
This is not quite the same as Reynolds buying Wrexham, but the idea is similar. A global celebrity is using his platform to bring attention to a lower-league club. However, in this situation, the emotional background comes before business.
