Robbie was too Keane to leave the Premier League

The Aston Villa forward was not granted an extension to his loan spell and return to LA Galaxy this month. Columnist Jake Lane believes he made a big mistake quitting the Premier League in the first place

Robbie Keane upped and left to go to the MLS too early.

In recent years, with the likes of David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg deciding to see out their careers in the States, America has become the new retirement home of football.

Like Scotland used to be but with better weather and arguably a better standard of football…or soccer!

But for me, Robbie Keane has left these shores too soon as he still has a lot to offer the Premier League and he has proved this since arriving at Villa from The Galaxy.

Robbie Keane is an honest player who always works tirelessly and one who has scored goals wherever he has played.

He has also shone at international level, most notably at the 2002 World Cup, scoring three goals in Ireland’s four games and is also the Republic’s record scorer.

Sure he had an unfortunate experience at Liverpool and he was frustrated at Tottenham, but I wonder if he is regretting the decision now…
