Robbie Savage has defended Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.

Grealish skippered the Villans in Sunday’s sickening defeat at Arsenal, with the 10-man hosts scoring two late goals to increase the pressure on manager Dean Smith, whose side sit 18th in the Premier League.

The Aston Villa midfielder caught a bit of flak from supporters after being perceived to jump out of the way of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s match-winning free kick on 84 minutes.

One Villa fan on BBC Radio 5 Live referred to the 24-year-old as a ‘luxury player’ and called on Smith to drop him for ‘a few games’.

But former Birmingham City star Savage launched a passionate defence of Grealish, admitting that he ‘wows’ him on a regular basis.

Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m a fan of Jack Grealish. I’ve seen his desire, his work ethic. I think he loves Aston Villa as we all know. I think his heart’s in the club and everytime I see him play for Villa I’m thinking, ‘Wow, he gives everything for that club’.”

Grealish has very much divided fans of the West Midlands club since their Premier League promotion, but his assist for Wesley’s goal at the Emirates indicates that he can be a serious asset in the top flight.
