Tottenham Hotspur need a new manager after parting ways with Jose Mourinho in March.
A number of managers have been linked, but reports suggest that Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers is a chief target.
The Daily Mail reported that Tottenham made contact with Rodgers, asking him not once but twice about a move to North London.
Rodgers doesn’t seem all that interested, but 90Min claim that Daniel Levy is ‘infatuated’ with Rodgers and would be prepared to make him the second-highest paid manager in the Premier League.
That could be tempting for Rodgers, but with Leicester set to finish above Tottenham in the Premier League this season, he may feel it’s a sideways or even backwards step.
Former Leicester ace Robbie Savage has now offered his take on the matter, telling TEAMtalk that he can see why Rodgers would want to make the move to North London.
It may well be a big-money deal given those Levy rumours, but Savage thinks it would be for footballing reasons, suggesting that he could Tottenham further than he ever could with Leicester.
Savage also feels that Rodgers won’t land one of the elite jobs in the Premier League, so may have to go to an Arsenal or Tottenham to make the next step forward.
Savage thinks Rodgers is good enough to manage any team, and if Leicester miss out on the Champions League, a move to Tottenham could actually happen after all.
“I’ve had the argument with a few people who have asked me why you would leave Leicester City to manage Spurs, but I can see why Brendan would do that,” said Savage. “If Leicester don’t qualify for the Champions League and win the FA Cup, Brendan might think it’s the right time to move on. Could he do any better than that next season? I’m not so sure. Liverpool will improve, Manchester United and Manchester City will strengthen again, you would expect to see Chelsea sign big players this summer and Leicester can’t compete with them financially. Tottenham have to get better next season and the same goes for Arsenal, but this might be as good as it gets for Leicester.”
“I know they won the title in 2016, but that was a one-off freak story that will never happen again, so it’s not inconceivable that Brendan would look at the Tottenham job and think it could be the next step for him. I’m sure he will stay at Leicester if they are in the Champions League, but what big job will come up in the next year that Rodgers might get? He won’t get Liverpool again, the Manchester clubs are out, Thomas Tuchel is doing well at Chelsea, so you are looking at Spurs and Arsenal. Brendan Rodgers is good enough to manage any club in world football. He is that good,” he added.
