Robbie Savage believes David Moyes’ pragmatic comments about Sunderland’s prospects are fair.
Sunderland manager David Moyes poses
Sunderland boss David Moyes told fans that the hard truth about this coming season is they face a relegation battle.
The Scotsman told SkySports he expects the club to be in a survival battle, having lost their opening two games of the season.
Sunderland have also struggled to add quality to their squad this summer, and Moyes received plenty of flak from supporters online, unimpressed with his lack of ambition.
BT Sport presenter Robbie Savage before the match
Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage has defender the Black Cats boss, arguing he simply said what he needed to.
Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club at 7pm (22/8): “I thought it was refreshing be honest. We hear managers come out cliched answers and all say same thing. I respect David Moyes for that.”
Sunderland lost Sam Allardyce’s services as manager this summer as he realised his ambition to take the England job, and Moyes’ swift appointment was generally regarded as a shrewd one.

His biggest challenge before the end of the month is to secure quality additions to the squad to make his task easier, and get the fans on side in the process.
Moyes’ comments may be accurate, but they won’t help sell many extra tickets at the Stadium of Light.
