Robbie Savage responds to Brendan Rodgers claim about Celtic

Brendan Rodgers recently made a bold claim about Celtic and the Premier League.

Former Leicester City and Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage has suggested in The Mirror that Celtic are good enough only for the Championship in England.

Savage made the comments in response to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers’s claim that the Glasgow giants would be a top four or a top six club in the Premier League.

“Make no bones about it,” The Mirror quoted Rodgers as saying. “If Celtic are in England, Celtic are one of the top four, six clubs there.

“So can you imagine then the resources playing at that level, what that would produce for Celtic. It could go as far as it wants then.”

Rodgers made the claim following Celtic’s performance against Manchester City at home in the Champions League.

The Hoops played out a 3-3 draw with City at Celtic Park in Champions League Group C on Wednesday evening.

Former Leicester and Derby midfielder Savage believes that the ex-Liverpool and Swansea City manager is wrong.

The former Wales international has claimed that if Celtic were playing in England, then they would be featuring in the Championship, not in the Premier League.

“I like Brendan, but let’s get real: Celtic Football Club is a massive institution, but on a purely footballing level they would currently only be one of the biggest fish in the Championship,” Savage wrote in The Mirror.

“Maybe that’s not what my friends from the green-and-white hoops heartlands north of the border want to hear.

“But when was the last time a top Premier League side went to Barcelona and got wiped out 7-0?”

The current Celtic squad has some good players, as they showed in their performance against City at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.

However, this team would not be able to compete for a top-four or a top-six finish in the Premier League.

Given the size of Celtic and the fanbase they have, the Bhoys would certainly be able to grow, sign better players and make themselves competitive in the coming years.
