Tottenham Hotspur finished second in the Premier League this season.
Former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage has suggested in The Mirror that Tottenham Hotspur overachieved in the Premier League during the 2016-17 season.
Savage, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, has praised Tottenham for their campaign, and has suggested that they overachieved in terms of wage structure and transfer spending.
“They were a washout in Europe, but Spurs were the only side to give Chelsea a run for their money in the title race and I’m not having any nonsense that they ‘bottled’ it,” Savage wrote in The Mirror.
“Nine wins in a row, and losing the 10th game, is not bottling it. In terms of wage structure and transfer spending, they were the biggest over-achievers. And Harry Kane collected another Golden Boot. 5*”
Savage does have a point. Tottenham did overachieve – well, kind of – but that is not something negative or something the fans should be overly concerned about.
Tottenham have a very good squad and have wonderful players, such as Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.
Spurs finished second because they were better than the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal, neither of whom had any consistency.
The North London outfit will be one of the favourites to win the Premier League title again next season.
Given the progress Mauricio Pochettino’s side have made over the past three or so seasons, one should not be surprised if Tottenham go all the way in 2017-18.
