Robbie Savage has predicted that Tottenham Hotspur will finish seventh in the Premier League this season, one place worse than they finished last term.

Spurs kick off their season with a trip to Everton in eight days.

It seems a long time ago now that Tottenham were contesting a Champions League final, but it was only in June 2019.

The Lilywhites finished sixth in the Premier League table last term, with Jose Mourinho taking the reins half-way through the campaign after Mauricio Pochettino’s dismissal.

And Mourinho has enjoyed a decent window so far, bringing in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Hart on a free transfer.

But Savage has written in The Mirror that he doesn’t believe that Spurs have the squad to break into the top four, arguing that the team – who haven’t won a trophy since 2008 – should prioritise the cup competitions.

He wrote: “7th – Tottenham. If they are as entertaining as the All Or Nothing documentary, Spurs will be worth watching. But the meter is ticking over to 13 years without a trophy and they should prioritise the cups. Jose Mourinho did well to finish second with Manchester United in 2017 and it would be even more remarkable if he did it again with Spurs this season.”

Is Savage right? It’s very hard to tell, if we’re honest.

Mourinho’s side had a brilliant end to the season, despite a few rocky results early on during Project Restart, and if they rediscover that end-of-term form then they’ll be well up there, competing for a Champions League qualification place.

But as we saw in January, the Lilywhites are only one injury to Harry Kane away from an all-out disaster and the Portuguese coach absolutely has to sign a top-drawer alternative to the England hitman.
