While Liverpool could do nothing about Lionel Messi’s sensational free kick, pundit Robbie Savage questioned whether Virgil van Dijk could have prevented Barcelona’s opener.
He told BBC Sport: “Liverpool have had more attempts but not on target. They’ve looked great on the counter-attack and have been terrific tonight.
“Van Dijk could have possibly done better for the goal but maybe the ball from Alba and Suarez’s run were too good.”
The problem Van Dijk’s successful season has created for himself, is that impossible feats are being demanded from him.

Liverpool are now seriously up against it for the second leg. The Reds have produced stirring comebacks before, and can’t be ruled out, but something really special is now required.
