Former Blackburn Rovers player-turned-pundit Robbie Savage has said that Everton won’t be finishing within the top four this season.
The Toffees have made a poor start to the campaign, and find themselves in the relegation mix at the moment.
Everton have spent big this summer, totaling near £150 million, but Savage has said that it may only be enough for them to finish in seventh again.
The football pundit mentioned that Everton will require a “miracle” like Leicester City to finish within the top four, and that they will have to spend £500 million and attract world-class players.
He made a bold prediction that Koeman won’t be able to close the gaps with the club that finished above Everton last season.
Savage added that it is “ludicrous” to think that Everton will close the gap on Liverpool, Arsenal or Manchester United.
He said it is “nonsense” to think that Everton can actually beat either of the three sides this season.
Everton will take on AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, and Koeman should be looking for all three points.
The new season is only five games old, and there’s plenty of football left. A stretch of winning run of around 8-9 games can change the league positions drastically, and Everton are well capable of that feat.
“Koeman has spent nearly £150 million this summer trying to break into the top six – and in today’s climate, that may only be enough for Everton to stand still and finish seventh again,” wrote Savage for The Mirror.
“Unless they have a miracle season like Leicester, to reach the Premier League’s top four, he will have to spend nearer £500 million and attract world-class players.
“Koeman isn’t going to end 22 years of drought overnight. He isn’t going to close the gap on the clubs who finished above Everton last season in a single transfer window.
“It is ludicrous to think they will close the gap on Liverpool, who finished 15 points above them in fourth, Arsenal (14 points above them in fifth) and Manchester United (who have taken their best player) at a stroke.
“Are Everton going to finish above at least two of those three this season? Nonsense.
“Since David Moyes’ side qualified for the Champions League in 2004-05, Everton have topped 70 points – usually the baseline requirement for a top-four finish – only once, when Roberto Martinez finished fifth with 72 points in 2014.”
