Robbie Savage claimed that the Championship is ‘one of the best’ leagues in the world after Aston Villa and Birmingham City were involved in a number of thrilling matches.

Dean Smith’s side scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to record a 3-3 draw at home to third-placed Sheffield United on Friday night.

On the other hand, Birmingham City were 4-0 up at QPR on Saturday afternoon, with the R’s begging the game back to 4-3 only for Nakhi Wells to miss a last-minute penalty.

Those matches saw former midfielder Savage make a claim about where the second tier of English football ranks compared with other leagues in the world.

“It’s the Championship,” Savage told 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live. “I watched the game on Friday night… 3-3 when they were 3-0 down. An incredible finish at Villa Park to that game. Billy Sharp gets a hat-trick then 3-3. Incredible.

“Then today [Birmingham’s game], 4-0 down to 4-3. I think the Championship is one of the best leagues in world football.”

For many years, the Championship has been known for its unpredictability, high scoring games and constant drama, which has been on show this season.

Earlier on in the campaign, Villa recorded a 5-5 draw at home to Nottingham Forest, who were leading the encounter 2-0 before Lewis Grabban scored a late equaliser to rescue a point for his team.

Added with that, in November, both Villa and Birmingham were involved in one of the games of the season when Smith’s side recorded a 4-2 win over their bitter rivals on home soil.

Nonetheless, both Villa and Blues will be hoping to make a late surge for one of the playoff places, with sixth-placed Bristol City currently occupying that final spot.
