Steve Bruce has been appointed as the new Aston Villa manager, replacing Roberto Di Matteo.
Pundit and former Birmingham City midfielder Robbie Savage has hailed Aston Villa’s appointment of Steve Bruce, and joked that he would be interested in becoming the 55-year-old’s assistant, having worked with him previously at rivals Birmingham.
The Welshman tweeted that his “phone is on” should Bruce be looking for a number two, as he begins his tenure at Villa Park.

Savage then suggested that he might even give the new Villa manager a ring, before considering changing his answer phone message after an awkward moment when Roy Keane was Sunderland manager and phoned the ex-midfielder, only to be greeted by a comical voicemail.

Bruce managed rivals Birmingham City for six years, with Savage playing under him at St Andrews. 41-year-old Savage appeared to poke fun at the new Villa manager’s past in the region, but was still willing to compliment the club’s decision to put him in charge.
While Savage will not be Bruce’s assistant at Villa, much to the disappointment of their fans, the former Hull boss will need to make a decision soon regarding his number two, as he gets to grips with their players and prepares them for Saturday’s derby clash with Wolves.
