The TV pundit recently revealed one of his secrets from his playing days at Derby County.

Former Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage has admitted on BBC Radio 5Live that while he was at Pride Park, he would post comments about himself on fan forums under an alias.

Savage, now 42, joined Derby in 2008 as the club was going through what would later be the worst ever season in Premier League history, as the Rams finished their campaign with 11 points and were subsequently relegated to the Championship.

Savage – like everyone around him – struggled massively and understandably let his poor form get to him, yet he dealt with it in a rather peculiar way.

The former Wales international said that he got so insecure about his performances and form, that he created an alias and would praise himself, while also ringing reporters who had given him low match ratings.

“I was the most insecure person ever, to the point where when I signed for Derby and was having a shocker, you know those chat boards? I made up a name, went on them and used to say, ‘Robbie played well today, didn’t he,” Savage told BBC Radio 5Live.

“Seriously, I was that insecure I used to phone newspaper reporters up if I got a six or a five in the paper and say, ‘What are you talking about, what game were you at? I was at least an eight or a nine!’

“I was so insecure as a person, I’d have the best game in the world and I’d still think, am I going to be playing next week? I’d phone four, five, six different people to say I played well.”

Savage can laugh about the incident now, as he did on 5Live, and the former Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City man has settled into retirement well, making a name for himself as a pundit.
