Robbie Neilson has told the Daily Record that Celtic would be pulling off a real transfer coup if they could sign Sheffield United full-back George Baldock this summer.

Baldock is reportedly on Neil Lennon’s radar as he considers potential replacements for Mikael Lustig, whose Parkhead future continues to remain up in the air with his contract expiring imminently.

The 26-year-old helped the Blades get promoted out of the Championship this past season, and it would be a surprise if Chris Wilder was happy to let him leave Bramall Lane ahead of their return to the Premier League.

But Dundee United boss Neilson – who also managed Baldock at MK Dons – suggested that the defender could be a fantastic signing for the Hoops, and added that he plans to wish his former player well on whatever path he decides to go down.

“He likes to get forward and that is the way Celtic like to play most of their games so he would fit in right away,” he told the Record. “Despite being a defender George generally plays high up the pitch most of the time.

“I’m really pleased for George as he is a good lad. I might drop him a text just to wish him good luck on whatever he decides to do.”

“Sheffield is also a two-team city which is similar to Glasgow. Both sides are competing against each other for supremacy. So if George moved to Celtic his situation would mirror a lot of what he has experienced already,” he went on to add.

“Celtic would be signing a very good player and it would be a real coup for them if they can tempt George north of the border.”

While Lustig improved following Lennon’s return, signing Baldock this summer would arguably see one of Celtic’s weakest areas become one of their biggest strengths.

He would be arriving ahead of what may be his peak years. And given how impressive he was for Sheffield United this past year, that should be quite an exciting thought for the Celtic fans who are now ready to see Lennon secure an upgrade on club hero Lustig.
