Robbie Keane has told PaddyPower.com that resting Harry Kane would be an admission by Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino that he isn’t planning a top-four finish.

The 25-year-old striker has managed only two goals in six games across all competitions for Spurs this season.

His sluggish performance in Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at Inter Milan has given rise to suggestions that the Tottenham marksman – whose partner gave birth to the couple’s first child last month – is in need a break.

Pochettino’s side, who visit Brighton on Saturday evening, have lost their last two Premier League games to leave them sixth in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Watford.

And former Tottenham striker Keane reckons that the Argentine manager cannot afford to rest the two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, without it being an indication that Champions League qualification isn’t on the agenda.

“If Tottenham leave Harry out – because he’s tired – then they’re making a statement that they don’t want to finish in the top four,” he told PaddyPower.com.

“It’s just not going to happen if you leave him out for a few games, because of the goals that he brings and that makes it unrealistic to rest him.”

Kane certainly does look out of sorts, but Keane is right. Is Fernando Llorente really going to be able to fill the void left by the England captain? Probably not, considering he managed just the one Premier League goal last season.

He might be tired, but a fatigued Kane is still better than a fully-fit Llorente and Pochettino has a big decision to make at Brighton.
