Wolves are looking into the possibility of signing former star Robbie Keane and he fits the Championship leaders’ needs.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking to bring veteran striker Robbie Keane back to Molineux, according to the Mirror.
Former Republic of Ireland international Keane, who originally left Wolves for Coventry City in 1999, could return to his first professional club if terms can be agreed on a departure from ATK.
This report follows news of Rafa Mir’s arrival in Wolverhampton as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men look to secure their probable promotion.
A Wolves front line previously reliant on Leo Bonatini could now be significantly boosted and the move for Keane makes much more sense than previous reported swoops for the likes of Dwight Gayle and Lewis Grabban.
The Birmingham Mail reported last month that Gayle, from Newcastle United, and Bournemouth’s Grabban – currently on loan at Sunderland – were being eyed up for January transfers.
But both players would surely cost considerable fees, having previously been signed for hefty sums, and a swoop for Gayle would be particularly difficult as Newcastle themselves lack forwards.
Keane’s signature could be somewhat cheaper and easier to secure and Wolves would not then have to worry about moving on a player like Gayle in the summer – the former Crystal Palace man having continued to struggle in the Premier League.
At 37, Keane would be tied to a short-term contract – and that is all Wolves need right now to get across the finish line.
