Robbie Fowler has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur got away with a ‘blatant’ penalty during this afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Watford.

VAR is becoming an increasingly prominent aspect of English football and it took centre stage in North London today.

Tottenham scored a late equaliser through Dele Alli, after the VAR screen displayed ‘No goal’, but it stood nonetheless following initial confusion.

Prior to that, the Hornets had a strong penalty appeal turned down in the first half when Gerard Deulofeu went to ground under a challenge from Jan Vertonghen, with the visitors leading 1-0 at the time.

But VAR deemed that it did not merit a penalty, and here’s how Fowler reacted on Twitter:

In Watford’s defence, it did look like a penalty, but Tottenham won’t care. They simply had to get a result today, following some horrendous defeats in recent weeks.

Yes, a victory was far more desirable than a draw, but Alli’s goal suggests that there’s a little bit of fight left in the Spurs players, but a lot more is needed if Mauricio Pochettino is to survive.
