Robbie Fowler has suggested in his Mirror column that the new addition of Darwin Nunez could help improve Liverpool superstar Mo Salah this summer – claiming Nunez could give Salah more ammunition than Sadio Mane did.

Nunez, 22, nabbed his second Liverpool goal of the season with an inadvertent flick against Fulham. Salah also got his name on the score sheet against the Cottagers, but the two sides played out a 2-2 draw – frustration for the Reds.

It comes after Nunez opened his account in the Community Shield against Manchester City, with a close-range header. Liverpool fans know they have a player with incredible goalscoring pedigree, after he netted for Benfica against them.

He also scored four goals in a pre-season friendly. Fowler was discussing who is in the running for the golden boot this season. He believes Nunez and Salah are certainly in with a shout come the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

But Fowler also suggests that the physicality, and true no.9-type style of Nunez will only help Salah. It will give him more chances to score goals, given the Uruguay international will be able to hold the ball up.

“The little Egyptian will benefit from Nunez. Mane was fantastic for Klopp’s team. But Nunez will give the Reds another dimension in the way he leads the line, holds the ball up and brings a physicality that hasn’t been there previously.”

The battle of the new signings stepped up over the weekend. Nunez netted again, while Erling Haaland overcame his Community Shield debut with a brace against West Ham at the London Stadium, in a 2-0 win.

Both players are on two goals from two, and will certainly be up there in terms of the golden boot. Of course, Haaland sits ahead of Nunez in terms of Premier League goals. But Fowler is right, his ability to hold it up will help Salah.

It might be that if Salah has his best season yet, if he goes on to eclipse last season’s tally of 23 league goals, then that might be because of the addition of Nunez. With time, Liverpool’s front three could be absolutely lethal.
