Leeds United have a new goalkeeper but that does not automatically mean the end for their current number one.
Shortly after Leeds United completed the singing of Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen, the print edition of the Sun (02/07/2017 page 63) claimed Whites stopper Rob Green was a surprise summer target for Arsenal.
The timing of the rumour was questionable, as is the suggestion that just because Leeds have signed another ‘keeper, Green is suddenly surplus to requirements.
After all, Wiedwald conceded 13 goals in his last three appearances for Bremen last season and he is going to take time to settle in his new surroundings.
Green is a man for all occasions, a seasoned professional with an impressive CV and the desire to remain at the top of his game for as long as possible.
With 15 clean sheets for Leeds last season, Green proved his worth, and while he is approaching the end of his career he deserves remain the club’s number one and make Wiedwald work hard for a starting spot.
New Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen will have his own ideas, and if he wants the 27-year-old German to start from the outset that will happen. But Green should not simply give up and look elsewhere.
He has one year remaining on his contract after agreeing an extension late last season, and he must use every minute of every training session to prove to his new boss that he should be starting when the new campaign kicks off.
Wiedwald may be around for the long haul, but Green is the man with the gloves and rightly so.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming friendlies and who makes the first mistake, because such is the Leeds veteran’s experience it is unlikely to be him.
