Leeds United picked up an important point away at Newcastle United in the Championship on Friday.
Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez and Leeds United’s Robert Green in action
Rob Green has suggested that Leeds’ goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan deserves to be patting himself on the back following the Whites’ draw with Newcastle at St James’ Park on Friday night, he told BBC Radio Leeds.
Garry Monk’s men collected a hugely valuable point away at the automatic-promotion chasers, and while Chris Wood’s excellent stoppage-time finish following Kemar Roofe’s sublime cross will see the pair secure plenty of plaudits, it was Green who arguably stole the show from a Leeds perspective.
The stopper made a number of astonishing saves throughout to often keep the dominant Magpies at bay. And the 37-year-old suggested that the preparation was a key reason why he was able to prevent Rafa Benitez’s men running away with the game.
“It’s pleasing,” he told BBC Radio Leeds when reflecting upon his own performance.
Leeds United manager Garry Monk celebrates the equaliser with the backroom team
“It’s something I’m sure Darryl Flahavan, the goalkeeping coach, was patting himself on the back because we do a lot of work with reaction stuff, and so, to bring it into a game is always pleasing so in that regard, if I can be there for the team, then that’s my job.”
The display would have undoubtedly strengthened the fans’ belief that Green’s arrival at Elland Road last summer was one of the best pieces of business the club did.
Leeds’ Rob Green applauds fans
But with the stopper quick to praise the backroom team, the result also highlights the kind of atmosphere that Monk has created since being appointed, where those working behind the scenes seem as integral to the side’s fortunes as the players who take to the pitch for every game.
And that unity will surely be extremely vital if the Whites manage to secure their spot in the play-offs this season.
