The Irish international is currently out of action with a severe knee injury.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot received a sign of the club’s faith in him yesterday, as he signed a new deal with the club.

The Irish international goalie signed a new four-year deal to remain with the club, despite currently being out of action with a serious knee injury.

The 30-year-old was clearly pleased to have agreed a deal to remain at Newcastle for what could be the rest of his career – as was evident on his Twitter account last night:

Elliot may have been surprised to receive a new deal.

The club signed Matz Sels in the summer and have already got Karl Darlow and Tim Krul, out on loan at Ajax currently, on the books and young talent Freddie Woodman coming through.

Add to that Elliot’s long-term injury problem and Newcastle’s move is an excellent show of faith from the club.

But it is also an indication of his form last season.

Elliot was brilliant despite Newcastle’s continued failures and without him they might have been relegated a lot sooner than they eventually were.

Hopefully he can return from injury as soon as possible and begin fighting for his number one jersey once again.
