Wolves U23s lost 1-0 to Villa in their Premier League 2 encounter but Edwards namechecked three players for good displays.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-23s manager Rob Edwards has given his post-match thoughts after his charges fell to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Aston Villa in Monday’s Premier League 2 encounter in Walsall.
A goal by Villa’s Cameron Archer not long after the start of the second half proved to be the difference between the two West Midlands rivals, though Wolves ace Dion Sanderson did hit the woodwork in the first period.
The result was Wanderers’ second PL2 loss in a row, having previously succumbed to defeat at the hands of Newcastle United, and it left them two points off the summit of the second division with just two league fixtures remaining.
Speaking after the game, Edwards was disappointed with the result, although the performance itself did not come under too much criticism, and he singled out three players who he felt did well against the Villans in goalkeeper Andreas Sondergaard, midfielder Ryan Giles and defender Edward Francis.
“We had good spells on control, opened them up well, created some really good chances, although there was always that threat there,” he told the official Wolves website. “You could see it, and Andreas had to make a couple of good saves from counter-attacks.
“We had some good moments when we managed to get Gilo (Giles) in, even off one ball, some of Ed Francis’ passing was very good in terms of that, but we played too much into their strengths once we went 1-0 down and they saw the game out comfortably then.”
Wolves U23s take on Stoke City in a home encounter on Monday 15 April next before wrapping up their PL2 campaign away against Manchester United on Friday 26 April, as mentioned on the official club website.
