The Wolverhampton Wanderers first team coach spoke in depth about working alongside Walter Zenga, the season so far and what Wolves need to do.
Rob Edwards in action for Wolves in 2005
Rob Edwards spoke exclusively to the Wolverhampton Wanderers official website earlier today, discussing what happened over the summer, the clubs start to the season and what they need to do from here on in. The West Midlanders currently sit bang in the middle of the Championship table heading into the international break, with their form and results having been very up and down.
New owners, a new manager and a whole host of new players arrived over the summer; the clubs mixed performances and results should come as no surprise, and Edwards acknowledged this, “Results have been slightly up and down but that is probably to be expected with such a large number of new players and the Championship being so tough and unpredictable.”
The 33-year-old spent 4 years as a player at Wolves, between 2004 and 2008, making 111 appearances. Edwards played for 8 other clubs over a 14 year career, namely Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Blackpool, Norwich City, Barnsley, Fleetwood Town and Shrewsbury Town, before retiring at the early age of 30 in 2013.

Edwards said he was pleased with some of the football Wolves have played this season, but that they needed to add consistency to their game, telling the club’s official website, ““If you look at the second half performance of Norwich, we need more of that.”
“The intensity was great, we were a real threat going forward without taking our chances. We got a really good goal from Dave Edwards to get us back into the game and I think everyone would agree that the second half was a decent performance.”
“We need intensity, both with and without the ball, moving it quickly or get it wide, and then when we are pressing make sure we go after them and don’t them play. The key now is consistency, especially in this league. Everyone knows they will lose one or two games from time to time, but you need to build up runs of three or four wins. If you look at the teams that are up there at the top of the league that is what they have been able to do so far.”
Wolves are currently 12th in the Championship
The former Wales international went on to state that there would be no better place to really kickstart their campaign than at Villa Park against a struggling and managerless Aston Villa side.
Villa are a club Edwards knows well, having first started training their as a 10-year-old, and not leaving the club until the age of 22. Despite the rivalry, Edwards has a fondness for both clubs, and said “It is [Villa] a great club – I think we are lucky in the Midlands to have big clubs with good histories like ourselves and Villa.”
Wolves travel to Villa Park in their first game after the current international break on October 15th. Both teams are winless in their last two games, with Villa having only won one game all season and recently having parted company with Champions League winning boss Roberto Di Matteo.
