Jay Bothroyd has weighed in on Jamie Carragher’s suggestion that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is ‘miles better’ than Manchester United great, Nemanja Vidic, ever was, as he posted on Twitter.
The one-cap England international stated that Virgil van Dijk has been ‘roasted’ by players this season and, on occasions, he has even ‘stopped running’.
Whilst no-one will doubt that the 31-year-old, who joined Liverpool in 2017 from Southampton, has been a great player for the Reds, the world’s best for a number of years and a Rolls Royce of a footballer.

Questions are now creeping in as to where van Dijk ranks when you compare him to the likes of Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Tony Adams and John Terry, to name a few.
For some, he is below that level because he hasn’t been the top dog for as long as those players were during their careers.
For Jay Bothroyd, the Netherlands International ‘doesn’t compare’ to someone like Ferdinand, who was ‘miles better’, as he responded to Carragher’s claims.
VAN DIJK HAS LOST HIS SPARK
There are some who feel that Liverpool’s previously ice-cool and error-free defender has lost his magic at the back – Gary Neville thinks he didn’t fancy it when the Reds recorded a 2-2 draw against Arsenal recently.
On many occasions this season, alongside many of his teammates, his form has gone out of the window.
How much does van Dijk’s injury contribute to that? And how much do those around him, such as Fabinho, also play a part? It was recently suggested that the Brazil star is ‘done’ at Liverpool.
Well, all will be answered next term because, if it’s another season of struggle, then there will be serious heat on the manager and his players.
